Spot & Wind

Catch the wind in Panama, our kite club is open from December till April !

Have a glimpse into Punta Chame

Punta Chame is a tranquil, remote peninsula on Panama's Pacific coast, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Panama City. It maintains its roots as a traditional fishing village—where local fishers bring in the fresh daily catch—while standing as the nation's premier destination for kitesurfing. The vibe is laid-back and low-key.

The Kitesurfing Spot & Conditions

The area is world-renowned for its consistent wind and warm water, ideal for all levels, particularly during the dry season.

  • Kiting Season (High Wind): December to April/May.

  • Wind: Consistent and strong Northerly to North-Northeast trade winds (15-30 knots), often accelerated by local thermal effects.

  • Water Temperature: Very warm year-round (28∘C+/82∘F+). No wetsuit needed.

  • Beaches: The peninsula features two primary beach types:

    • Punta Chames north side: Kitesurfing scene, more rustic gray-sand stretch, where the fishing community is active.

    • South side: Features a long stretch of soft white sand.

Water Conditions by Tide

Kiting conditions are heavily influenced by the significant Pacific tidal swing:

  • Low Tide: Expansive, wide beach with the flattest water near the shore—perfect for beginners.

  • Mid-Tide (Lagoons): Ideal time for butter sessions in the sheltered natural lagoons.

  • High Tide/Afternoon: Stronger wind and chop, excellent for waves jumping.

  • Sandbars: Unique, flat-water on John Wayne's playground that only appear during spring low tides (best for intermediate/advanced riders).

Important Safety & Amenity Notes

  • Stingray Warning: Avoid swimming at low tide. When wading in shallow water, always perform the "stingray shuffle" (shuffle your feet along the sand) and consider wearing water shoes/booties.

  • General Swimming: mid/high tide is the best time for swimming when the stingray risk is lower.

  • Basic Amenities: While the town of Chame (on the main highway) offers major services, the peninsula itself maintains a rustic charm. You will find:

    • A handful of beachfront hotels, resorts, and numerous kitesurfing schools.

    • Family-run seafood eateries with fresh local fare.

    • Two small local supermarkets for basic needs.

Beyond the Beach

On no-wind days or during a break, explore the area’s natural beauty:

  • Hiking: Climb Cerro Chame for spectacular panoramic views of the entire peninsula.

  • Other Water Sports: Surf at Playa Caracol or take a boat trip to Isla Otoque for snorkeling.
